Thornton-le-Dale visitor information
Everything practical in one place: how to get here, where to park, the times of year that suit different visits, coming with a dog, and what to expect underfoot.
Getting here
Thornton-le-Dale sits on the A170, the Thirsk to Scarborough road, about three miles east of Pickering and on the southern edge of the North York Moors National Park. Coming from the west you pass through Pickering; from the east you come in along the A170 from the Scarborough direction, past Allerston.
For post and addresses, the post town is Pickering, the postcode area is YO18 and the dialling code is 01751.
Parking
There is a large village car park off Maltongate — set YO18 7SD in the satnav. Use it in preference to hunting for a space in the centre: the main street is narrow, the beck runs alongside it, and roadside space is limited and often in front of people's homes.
Parking near the green is limited on Show days in August, when the village is at its busiest — arrive early, or park and walk in. Charges, payment methods, time limits, coach parking, motorhome parking and blue-badge bays: [owner to confirm].
When to visit
Spring brings the gardens along the beck into their own and the woodland walk to Ellerburn at its freshest. Summer is the classic picture-postcard season — flowers, paddling in the beck, and the most visitors, so early mornings are the reward. Autumn suits Dalby Forest and the drive over the Moors. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, with dark skies for stargazing, but village opening hours shorten — ring ahead.
Village event and Show dates, and any road closures: [owner to confirm each year].
Visiting with dogs
This is good dog-walking country: the pond nature trail, the woodland route to Ellerburn and the White Rose Way all start in the village. Keep dogs under close control around livestock and on the moorland edge, and be aware of ground-nesting birds in spring and early summer. Individual pubs, tea rooms and accommodation set their own policies: dog friendliness of each business: [owner to confirm].
Accessibility
The village centre is broadly level along the beck, which helps, but the surfaces are traditional: stone kerbs, small bridges, gravel and some narrow pavements beside a working A-road. Woodland paths towards Ellerburn are unsurfaced and can be muddy or uneven after rain.
Step-free routes, accessible toilets and their locations, blue-badge parking, and which businesses have level access: [owner to confirm on the ground].
