Where to stay in Thornton-le-Dale

Where a business does not publish something, a dog policy, step-free access, a season, the entry says so rather than guessing, because a detail taken off a booking site is not the business's own word.

Coming for Mathewsons

If you are coming for Mathewsons, stay at Prospect Farm. Its own directions tell you to turn into Prospect Place immediately before or after Mathewsons Auctions, depending which way you arrive, and it describes itself as sitting just behind them. It is about 192 metres from the Roxby Garage premises, a two-minute walk, and it publishes its own distance to the village centre as 0.1 miles. Note which Mathewsons, though: Roxby Garage in the village is the gift shop and showroom, while the auction saleroom is in Pickering, a mile and a half away and not walkable. On weekdays during a viewing period Mathewsons run a free shuttle linking the village, the saleroom and Eastgate car park in Pickering; see Bangers & Cash and Mathewsons.

The second is Lumley Cottage on Brook Lane, about 344 metres from Roxby Garage.

Lumley Cottage

Prospect Farm Campsite

A Camping and Caravanning Club certificated site for tents, caravans, motorhomes and campervans; twin-axle vehicles are prohibited. Prospect Farm, Prospect Place, YO18 7LQ. It publishes its own distances: 0.1 miles to the village centre and 2.2 miles to Dalby Forest. Every pitch has a 16A electric hook-up, with WiFi, showers, toilets and bike and equipment storage. Dogs are £2 per dog per night, with a dogs field on the booking form. Caravan bookings include one car; motorhome and campervan bookings do not, and extra vehicles are £3 a night. The Grange Guest House

Bed and breakfast in a house dated 1780, with five rooms named Pickering, Scarborough, Whitby, Filey and York. High Street, YO18 7QW, with its car park at YO18 7QU; it publishes its distance to the village as about 500 metres, a few minutes' walk. Private parking front and rear, the rear car park reached via South Lane, first come first served. The Pickering Suite is the only ground-floor room and has one step down into it; the other four are on the first floor. The Buck Inn

Better known here as a village pub, the Buck advertises overnight stays: one sentence on its own homepage and a Book item in its navigation. It publishes no rooms page, no room count and no rates. The New Inn

The Georgian coaching house at the village crossroads, listed in the directory, lets six en-suite rooms upstairs and a self-catering cottage. The Square, Maltongate, YO18 7LF. Dogs are welcome in the cottage; whether they are allowed in the rooms is not published. Rates, parking, accessibility and how to book: not published. Like the Buck, it lets rooms without publishing much about them, so ask the pub directly.

Overbrook Caravan Park

Adults only, 18 and over, for touring caravans, and explicitly no tents. Fifty hard-standing pitches, 25 seasonal and 25 touring, each with a 16-amp metered hook-up, on Maltongate, YO18 7SE, on the site of the former Thornton Dale railway station. It publishes the walk to the village centre as a level half-mile, either along Maltongate past the cottages and the beck, or through the woodland. Pet friendly, with an on-site dog area and a dog shower; dogs on a short lead at all times. Season 1 March to 4 January. It deserves credit for one thing in particular: it publishes a full and unusually candid access statement, including its own limits, such as no dedicated disabled toilet, limited space for wheelchair manoeuvring, and low outdoor lighting, with a torch advised. Station House Holiday Cottages

Four self-catering cottages in the converted former railway station: The Ticket Office, Mews Cottage, House Cottage and Gallery Cottage. Maltongate, YO18 7SE, a level half-mile from the village, run by Natalie and Darren. No dogs and no children; in its own words, "We regret smokers, children and pets are not accepted." Editorial note. Overbrook Caravan Park and Station House Holiday Cottages share a telephone number and a postcode, and both describe the former railway station site. They appear to be the same business under two names, offering different things, pitches and cottages. Neither site says so. They are listed separately here because they sell separately.

High Oaks Grange

A six-bedroom house sleeping up to 12, plus self-catering cottages, lodges and glamping pods across 60 acres inside the National Park. Thornton Road, YO18 7JX, which it publishes as one mile from Thornton-le-Dale and one mile from Pickering. Its own satnav warning is worth repeating: "Your Sat Nav will take you to an industrial estate not to our entrance." Its what3words is ///blinks.tailors.apart. Low Farm Campsite

Thirty pitches over two acres for tents, caravans, campervans and motorhomes, plus a static caravan to let and horse riding holidays with stables and grazing. Low Farm, Ellerburn, YO18 7LL, in the hamlet up the dale rather than the village, with walking paths to the village and direct footpath access to Dalby Forest. Editorial note. Low Farm's website still advertises an April 2025 reopening as though it were in the future and carries no 2026 season. It is trading, but ring before you travel rather than relying on the site.

Sands Farm Cottages

In Wilton, not Thornton-le-Dale, about 1.6 miles east along the A170. Eight cottages including a restored chapel, with The Barn due in late 2026. Private gardens, hot tubs, two EV charging points, and ample allocated parking with overflow for twelve-plus vehicles. Four cottages are dog-friendly, Fuchsia, Honey, Jasmine and Rose, with a dog exercise field behind the Barn. Direct booking, with a 10 per cent deposit and the balance due 30 days before arrival.

It has the best published accessibility detail of any property on this page. Fuchsia Cottage is designed specifically for wheelchair use, with an accessible bathroom, kitchen adaptations and private outdoor space. Honey and Jasmine have a bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor, and The Barn has a ramped entrance and accessible bathroom facilities. sandsfarmcottages.co.uk

Easthill Farm House has a website, but it could not be read. Nothing is published here about it because nothing could be verified. Third-party directories give an address; this archive does not repeat addresses it has not seen on the business's own site.

"The Cottage" has no website of its own that could be found at all. Every result is an agency or review listing, and it appears to be an agency-managed let with no direct channel. There is nothing here this archive can stand behind, including where it is.

If the village is full, likely on summer weekends and around the August Show, widen the search across the National Park. Pickering, three miles west, has the most choice and keeps you within easy reach of the steam railway and the castle.
