Bangers & Cash
Visiting Mathewsons in Thornton-le-Dale
By Jon Cosson · Last checked
An independent guide from the village. Not connected to Mathewsons or the programme. For entries, bidding and the catalogue, go to mathewsons.co.uk. Checked 10 October 2026.
Most people who come to the village because of Bangers & Cash want three things: to see the Mathewsons building and the cars in the museum, to buy something in the shop, and to find out whether they can see the auction. This page answers those in order, with the parking, the toilets and the lunch options that make the difference between a good visit and a frustrating one. The auctions themselves are at Pickering and are not open to the public; the viewing week before each sale is, and the free shuttle bus from the village is the easy way to get there.

Before you go: the facts
- Where
- Mathewsons, Roxby Garage, Pickering Road, Thornton-le-Dale, YO18 7LH, on the A170 at the western end of the village. Telephone 01751 474455.
- Museum
- a selection of Derek Mathewson's own cars in one of the showrooms, £2.50 per person, paid in person in September 2026; Mathewsons do not publish the price. Steep steps at the entrance; no dogs inside; accompanied children welcome.
- Hours
- Mathewsons' visiting page gives 9am to 4pm seven days a week; its contact page gives 10am to 4pm, and 9am to 5pm from Easter to October. In practice the hours flex with how busy the village is, so ring before a special journey.

- Toilets
- the public toilets by the lake, over the footbridge from the car park, accessible with a RADAR key.
- Bus
- Coastliner 840 (Leeds, York, Malton, Pickering, Whitby) stops in the village at Thornton Cross and Greengate Lane, a few minutes' walk from Mathewsons.
- The auctions
- held at Unit 10, Enterprise Way, Thornton Road, Pickering, YO18 7NA, behind closed doors. The public can go to the six-day viewing before each sale, Wednesday to Tuesday, closed Sunday, £5 a head including a charity donation. Mathewsons' Pickering site is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to noon; viewing hours are not published separately.
- Shuttle bus
- free, on weekdays during the viewing period, between Thornton-le-Dale, the Pickering saleroom and Eastgate car park in Pickering. Times are on Mathewsons' Planning a Visit page.
- Rules at the Pickering door
- sign in at reception and wear the hi-vis vest you are given; no visitors aged 16 or under; no pets; no food or drink; no handbags or large bags. You can register as a bidder at reception or online beforehand.
The museum and the shop
Mathewsons' building is the long, low green-fronted garage on the main road, lettered Classic Auctions along the shop windows. The gift shop is at the front, under a ceiling of enamel signs, with the clothing, mugs, books and models seen on the programme. The museum is through the shop and up the steps: one showroom of Derek's own cars, several of them Aston Martins, with racing photographs and period signs round the walls. The display changes. It is not a large museum, and people who arrive expecting one are the ones who go away disappointed; allow half an hour, and treat it as the place where the story started rather than the main event. The auction office at the end of the building is a working office, not a visitor attraction.
Our Bangers & Cash hub tells the Mathewsons story in full, and the who's who covers everyone you see on screen.
Where to eat within five minutes
- Café Bouchère, Wednesday to Sunday 9am to 4pm, food until 3.30pm.
- The Chocolate Factory, 10.30am to 5pm, 1 February to 31 December, with its cafe.
- Baldersons ice cream parlour on the green, March to October.
- The New Inn and the Buck Inn for pub lunches; hours vary with the season.
Our eating and drinking page has the full list with hours checked on 10 October 2026.
Seeing the sale cars
The cars are at Pickering, a short drive west along the A170, and the only time the public can see them is the viewing week: six days, Wednesday to the following Tuesday, closed on the Sunday, before each auction. The auction dates page on our Moors site lists every viewing week as Mathewsons publish them. On weekdays the free shuttle bus runs between the village, the saleroom and Eastgate car park in Pickering, so the plan that works is to park once in the village car park, see the museum and the shop, ride the shuttle to the saleroom, and ride it back for lunch. Parking near the saleroom is on-street and limited; Mathewsons ask you to park considerately and not block neighbouring businesses, and Blue Badge holders are welcome to use it. The shuttle is a weekday service, so for the Saturday morning viewing drive to Eastgate car park in Pickering (YO18 7DY) and walk out along Thornton Road. Our Moors site's saleroom page has the detail.
Sale days are behind closed doors. If you want to bid, register online or at reception during the viewing; bidding is online, by telephone or by commission bid, and our how to buy guide explains the fees.
Make a day of it
Half a day covers Mathewsons, the beck and lunch; a full day adds the viewing at Pickering or a walk. The village page walks you round the green, the market cross and Beck Isle Cottage; the Ellerburn circular is the gentle walk; Dalby Forest is minutes away by car. Staying over for a sale week? See where to stay, which lists ten places with phones, postcodes and dog rules.
