Shops in Thornton-le-Dale
Half the pleasure of a chocolate-box village is that the shops are still shops: two antiques venues full of finds, a gallery of local art and gifts, chocolates made on the premises, and a family general store that has traded on The Square since 1856. An hour's browsing here is a proper afternoon out.

Gray's Emporium: antiques, collectables and clocks
The village's antiques shop on The Square: a browsing house of antiques, collectables, vintage and painted furniture, and clocks with a clock-repair service. Stock changes constantly, so it rewards a slow look rather than a targeted hunt, and it pairs naturally with a visit to Mathewsons and the automobilia at the other end of the village.

Thornton-le-Dale Antiques Centre: The Stables, Chestnut Avenue
A larger antiques venue at The Stables on Chestnut Avenue, with around a dozen dealers under one roof. Antique and vintage furniture, ceramics, lighting, clocks, mirrors, jewellery, silver and coins, with free valuations and a house-clearance service. Onsite parking makes it easy to stop for a proper rummage.

Gifts, chocolate and the village store
Baldersons Gallery & Gifts: Chestnut Avenue
A gallery and gift shop on Chestnut Avenue selling local art, crafts, cards and gifts. It is part of the Baldersons family businesses on Chestnut Avenue; for the café, bakery and famous ice cream alongside it, see eating and drinking.

The Chocolate Factory: The Forge
Chocolates made on the premises at The Forge on The Square; the smell reaches the pavement, and the Thornton-le-Dale ducks in chocolate are the local souvenir. Watching the work being done a few feet from the counter is much of the appeal. It also appears on the eating and drinking page.

Wardill Bros: general store & post office
Trading on The Square since 1856 and still family-run: papers, magazines, cards, everyday essentials, gifts and souvenirs, packed into a shop denser than its frontage suggests. It houses the village post office and doubles as the North York Moors National Park Information Point, which makes it the natural first stop for local advice as well as milk and a stamp.

Nisa Local: village convenience store
An independently owned convenience store trading under the Nisa symbol group at 5 Pickering Road, so it is a village business rather than a supermarket branch. It stocks the usual convenience range: fresh produce, bread, milk, chilled and frozen food, household goods, and beers, wines and spirits.
The store also has an internal cash machine, a parcel collection point and a bill payment service. Its published hours run later than most other village shops, which makes it the place to go for milk, food or cash outside normal trading hours.

More gifts and crafts
The gift shop and takeaway alongside Lavenders Tea Rooms at The Forge adds cards, gifts and food-to-go to the village centre, while seasonal craft and flower outlets come and go over the years. This guide lists only what is currently trading and named.
Making a morning of it
The shops sit within a few minutes' walk of one another, so the sensible order is: park once on Maltongate (see getting here and parking), browse from The Square outwards, then break for coffee or lunch, the options are on eating and drinking.
