Run by village volunteers as a registered charity
Thornton-le-Dale Village Hall is registered charity 1212200, a charitable incorporated organisation registered on 18 February 2025, managed by volunteers from the village. It succeeds the earlier charity, number 1109170; the parish council minutes of 14 October 2025 confirm the incorporation. They run it for residents, local organisations and the wider community. Because it is volunteer-run, enquiries may not be answered instantly; please be patient and direct questions to the hall rather than to this guide.
What the hall offers
The hall is available for hire by village groups and external users. Facilities include a well-equipped kitchen, ladies, gents and disabled toilets, and a garden area with a boules pitch and picnic seats. There is parking on site.
Main hall
The main hall measures 20m by 10m, making it suitable for larger meetings, parties, exercise classes, markets and community events.
Committee room
The committee room measures 8m by 6m, a more intimate space for smaller meetings, committee sessions or break-out groups.
Kitchen and toilets
A well-equipped kitchen, plus ladies, gents and disabled toilets, are available for hirers.
Garden
Outside there is a garden area with a boules pitch and picnic seats.

The hall describes its rates as excellent, but individual prices and terms are set by the volunteers. We do not publish rates here because we cannot verify them; please ask the hall directly.
For visitors: where it is and parking
The hall stands on Pickering Road, Thornton-le-Dale, YO18 7LG, on the A170 roughly two miles from Pickering towards Scarborough. If you are coming for an event, the hall has its own parking. Three halls, and which is which

The Village Hall and the Hill Memorial Institute are about 90 metres apart at the western end of the village, which is why they get confused. The Old Grammar School is at the far end, about 280 metres from the Village Hall; see Lady Lumley's Almshouses and the Old Grammar School.
The Hill Memorial Institute
The Hill Memorial Institute is the village's civic building. The parish council meets there monthly and uses it as the clerk's postal address. It has a ground-floor meeting room with a kitchen and a projector, and a full-size snooker table upstairs. It is managed by Wardill Bros in the village centre. Two different postcodes are published for it, and this guide has not been able to establish which is right, so none is given here.
Who Hill was. Two published accounts disagree, and both are set out here.
The Victoria County History of the North Riding, published in 1923, records that the institute was founded by deed dated 16 November 1897 in memory of the late Rev. John Richard Hill. The Hills had held the manor of Thornton since 1669, and John Richard Hill, lord of the manor, died in that same year of 1897, so the deed is a memorial raised by his family, in the year of his death, on their own land. Their monuments are in All Saints.
The village's own visitor site gives a different account: that the building was put up by villagers on land given by the Hill family, funded by donations in memory of those who died in the First World War, with the illuminated clock later given by the Priestman family.
These cannot both be the whole story. The 1897 deed predates the war by seventeen years, and the Victoria County History was published within living memory of both. The likeliest reconciliation is that a trust was founded in 1897 and the present building, or a rebuilding of it, was paid for by subscription after 1918 and came to be understood as a war memorial too. No source says that, and this page does not assert it.
