The programme in brief
Bangers & Cash follows the Mathewson family's classic car auction business near Thornton-le-Dale. It first aired on Yesterday on 18 April 2019 and is made for UKTV, now shown on U&Yesterday and streamed on U. The spin-off Bangers & Cash: Restoring Classics started in July 2022. In July 2025 UKTV ordered four more series of each, 72 episodes in all, which the production company called UKTV's biggest ever order.
Derek Mathewson
On screen: the auctioneer and the head of the family business. Air TV describes him as an auctioneer and respected expert, and as the master of witty one-liners; on sale days he is the one bringing the hammer down.
In the business: Derek has traded cars since 1970, first in Bedfordshire, then from 1988 in North Yorkshire. He told Classic & Sports Car in 2022 that after the difficult years around 2008 "it was a case of switching to auctions or packing up". The first classic car auction followed in 2011. Air TV's Andy Joynson said in 2019 that "Derek turns every auction into an event". Part of his own collection is displayed in the showroom.
Paul and Dave Mathewson
On screen: Derek's sons, who work in the family business and appear in every series. In Restoring Classics they give their thoughts and advice on each project alongside Derek.
In the business: both are directors of Mathewsons Classic Cars Ltd, Paul since 2021 and Dave since 2023, according to Companies House. Mathewsons and the broadcaster do not set out a fixed split of their jobs, so we have not invented one.
Charlie and Jack
Derek's grandsons, who help out and work in the business, and appear on screen as the third generation. Air TV's line for the programme is that the Mathewsons have been turning old bangers into cash for three generations.
Sarah
The office manager and a family friend, as the 2019 launch announcements described her. Sarah appeared in the first four series and has not been seen on the programme since.
Bubbles
A familiar face around the saleroom. He is not named in the broadcaster's announcements, so the best account of what he does is our own interview with Bubbles.
The voice: Toby Foster
The narrator of Bangers & Cash, Restoring Classics and Bangers & Cash: Live. Toby Foster is a comedian, actor and long-time presenter on BBC Radio Sheffield, and played Les, the drummer in the club band Les Alanos, in Phoenix Nights.
