Bangers & Cash: The most memorable cars and finds

By Jon Cosson · Last checked

Most cars on Bangers & Cash come and go in a few minutes of television. A few stay with you: the car buried in a garage for decades, the one with a famous owner, the one nobody had seen before. These are some of them, with the episode they appeared in and, where Mathewsons published it, what they sold for.

Sale results come from Mathewsons' published lot pages, linked on each card; some lots may be sold provisionally. Each figure carries its match status.

How sure is each figure?

  • Confirmed: matched to a result Mathewsons published, and a second source, such as the lot page naming the Restoring Classics team as vendor, identifies the car.
  • Strong match: matched to a result Mathewsons published: the only candidate in the period, with catalogue details that match the episode.
  • Possible match: a likely match that has not been confirmed. Treat as indicative only.
  1. Series 1, episode 1

    1.1965 Austin Mini Cooper S

The very first episode set the tone: a rare Mini Cooper S found under rubbish in a garage. It went on to sell for £18,000, a figure few would have guessed from the state it was found in.

  2. Series 1, episode 2

    2.Ford Sierra Cosworth

Few cars draw a crowd like a Cosworth. This one brought fast Ford fans out in force and showed how strongly the 1980s performance cars had come back into fashion.

  3. Series 1, episode 3

    3.1952 Jowett Javelin

A Bradford-built saloon from a maker that no longer exists. Derek used it to look back at the lost Jowett marque, a reminder that the programme is as much about motoring history as money.

  4. Series 1, episode 6

    4.Moskvitch

A Soviet saloon is not what most people expect to see at a Yorkshire auction. It found exactly the right home, with a buyer who loves Eastern Bloc classics.

  5. Series 1, episode 10

    5.Rolls-Royce and Bentley collection

Not every sale is a happy one. A widow parted, reluctantly, with the Rolls-Royce and Bentley collection her late husband had built up, after his death.

  6. Series 2

    6.Ford Fiesta XR2

Some cars find their way home. This Fiesta XR2 was bought back by its original owner, who had tracked it down, and it sold for £5,000 over its reserve.

  7. Series 2, episode 4

    7.Talbot Sunbeam Lotus

A Talbot Sunbeam Lotus left in a farmyard for 29 years. It is the classic barn find story: a car forgotten for decades, then rediscovered.

  8. Series 2, episode 6

    8.Three 1970s MGs

Three MGs still in their factory wax after 40 years in storage. Cars that had never really been used left everyone unsure what they were worth.

  9. Series 3, episode 6

    9.Vehicles from Heartbeat

Heartbeat, the ITV drama, was filmed locally, so vehicles from it coming up for sale had a local pull as well as a screen one.

  10. Series 5, episode 1

    10.Morgan from Joe Brown

A Morgan collected from the pop star Joe Brown, in the same episode as a Clenet from a Motorhead drummer. Two rock and roll owners in one hour of television.

  11. Series 5, episode 11

    11.Argentinian Army Mercedes G-Wagen

A military G-Wagen from the Argentinian Army that saw service in the Falklands War. Few lots arrive with that much history attached.

  12. Series 5, episode 14

    12.Bedford CA campervan

A Bedford CA campervan dropped off by the Call the Midwife actor Cliff Parisi. A plain working van with a familiar face behind the wheel.

  13. Series 6, episode 8

    13.Two Batmobile replicas

Two Batmobile replicas built by one enthusiast, one on a Mitsubishi GTO and one on a BMW Z4. Screen cars, of a sort, and impossible to miss in the saleroom.

  14. Series 6, episode 9

    14.Peel P50

The world's smallest production car. It is the sort of car that makes people stop and look twice.

  15. Series 6, episode 1

    15.A garage of 270 motorbikes

Derek went to look at a Citroen 2CV and found a garage holding more than 270 motorbikes. A hoard on that scale is rare even by this programme's standards.

  16. Series 9, episode 13

    16.1977 Triumph TR7 from Detectorists

The TR7 driven by Toby Jones's character Lance in Detectorists, registered WGJ 22R and owned by Mackenzie Crook, with its boot signed by the cast. A car known to a whole sitcom audience.

Sold for £30,200 at Mathewsons, 28 April 2023 (Strong match)

  17. Series 10, episode 1

    17.1924 Rolls-Royce Playboy Roadster

A 1924 Rolls-Royce once owned by Fred Astaire, with a letter and a photograph to document it. Hollywood provenance on a car nearly a century old.

Marked sold in Mathewsons' June 2023 timed auction; the price was not published.

  18. Series 12, episode 1

    18.1960 Aston Martin DB4

About 40 years under a tarpaulin in a garage that had collapsed around it, with a tree blocking the way out. Derek estimated around £80,000; the hammer went well past that.

Sold for £145,000 at Mathewsons, 17 October 2024 (Confirmed)

  19. Restoring Classics, series 4, episode 1

    19.1981 Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit

The Restoring Classics team's most luxurious purchase at the time, and a step up from their usual projects.

Sold for £26,500 at Mathewsons, 15 December 2023 (Strong match)

  20. Restoring Classics, series 4, episode 2

    20.1932 Royal Enfield Cycar

A 1932 Royal Enfield Cycar that had been off the road for about 50 years. Few people had seen one, let alone one brought back to life.

Sold for £4,000 at Mathewsons, 14 February 2024 (Strong match)

  21. Restoring Classics, series 8, episode 5

    21.1984 Matra Murena 2.2S

One of 480 S models of the Matra Murena. The team were clear it was not a full restoration, and said so.

Sold for £11,500 at Mathewsons, 31 July 2025 (Strong match)
