The Classic Car Owner's Guide

The Mathewsons auction catalogue

By Jon Cosson · Last checked

Mathewsons publishes the catalogue for each of its classic vehicle and memorabilia sales on its own website, lot by lot. This guide explains where to find it, what each listing tells you and what it does not, and how to use it before you view or bid. We are an independent village guide, not connected to Mathewsons.

Where to find the catalogue

Each sale has its own page on the Mathewsons website, reached from its upcoming auctions page. The sale page lists the sale days and the lots offered on each day, and every lot has its own page with photographs and details. After the sale, results appear on Mathewsons' auction results page. As far as we can find, the catalogue is published online only; we have found no printed or downloadable version.

For the next sale dates, see our Mathewsons auction dates page.

When the catalogue appears

Mathewsons does not publish a fixed date for its catalogues. Lots are added to the website as entries come in, so the catalogue builds over the weeks before a sale, and it is worth checking more than once.

What a lot listing shows

A vehicle listing usually gives:

Mileage is not a standard field, so look for it in the description and check it against the paperwork when you view.

What the catalogue does not tell you

Lots are sold as seen, with no warranty, and the descriptions are supplied by the sellers. Mathewsons does not offer formal condition reports; it asks buyers to inspect during viewing or to call to arrange an appointment. Photographs help, but they do not show everything. Our guide to inspecting a classic car explains what to look at.

Estimates and reserves

Each listing carries an estimate or guide. Sellers agree a reserve with Mathewsons, and some lots may be sold provisionally: a bid close to the reserve can be referred to the seller after the sale. Our auction terms page explains the language used.

How big are the sales?

Mathewsons' main sales usually run over three days, Wednesday to Friday, and recent catalogues have run to several hundred lots, in some sales around 900, roughly half of them vehicles. Most of the rest is memorabilia and automobilia, listed in its own sections, which has to be collected in person. Lots that do not sell usually go into an online timed sale shortly afterwards; see Mathewsons auctions.

Using the catalogue: a checklist

  1. Shortlist early and check back as more lots are added.
  2. Read the whole description, not just the headline details.
  3. Check the V5C line and what paperwork is listed.
  4. Note the viewing dates. Viewing is usually in the week before the sale, at Pickering; sale days are closed to the public. See visiting Mathewsons.
  5. Register to bid on the Mathewsons website before the sale.
  6. Set your limit including the buyer's premium. Our how to buy guide explains the fees.
  7. Decide how you will bid: online, by telephone or with a commission bid left on the lot page. Our bidding strategy guide may help.
