How a classic car auction works

  1. There is no warranty, so check the car yourself. Auction houses expect buyers to satisfy themselves about a car's condition, age and originality. Descriptions and condition reports are opinions, not a mechanical inspection. Our inspection guide explains what to look at.
  2. Use the viewing days. Most houses hold a viewing before each sale where you can inspect the cars and their history files. If you cannot go, ask for a condition report and more photographs.
  3. Register in advance and bring ID. You must register for each sale, and anti-money laundering rules mean houses ask for photo ID and proof of address.
  4. You need not be in the room. Most houses take bids in the room, live online, by telephone and by commission, where staff bid for you up to a maximum you set. See our bidding strategy guide.
  5. The fall of the hammer is a contract. Once your bid is accepted you have bought the car and cannot withdraw.
  6. A buyer's premium is added. Each house adds a buyer's premium, plus VAT where it applies, to the hammer price, and online bidding can carry an extra charge. Read each house's terms before you bid; Mathewsons' terms are explained on our how to buy page.
  7. Pay and collect promptly. Payment is usually due soon after the sale, cars are released once funds have cleared, and cars left after the collection deadline can incur storage charges. See getting your car home.

Before bidding on a particular model, read its buying guide and our thinking of bidding checklist.
