The Pickering saleroom is where the Bangers & Cash auctions happen and where the public can view the cars in the week before each sale. It is on Enterprise Way off Thornton Road, on the edge of the town rather than in the centre, and parking beside it is the one thing that goes wrong for visitors. Here is how to do it without the frustration.

Where it is
Unit 10, Enterprise Way, Thornton Road, Pickering, North Yorkshire, YO18 7NA. Telephone 01751 474455. The saleroom is open to the public only during the published viewing week before each auction: Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 12 noon, closed Sunday. Entry is £5. The sale days themselves are behind closed doors. Our auction dates page lists every viewing week.
It is a different place from the Mathewsons museum and shop, which are at Roxby Garage on the main road through Thornton-le-Dale, about two miles east along the A170, and open every day.
Parking: what Mathewsons say and what happens
Mathewsons describe on-street parking near the site and welcome Blue Badge holders and anyone with accessibility needs to use it. That is accurate, and during a viewing week it fills completely. People end up leaving cars wherever there is a gap, some of them not legal spaces. We would not drive there and expect to park.
The answer is the free shuttle bus. It runs on weekdays during viewing weeks and links three places: Thornton-le-Dale, the saleroom, and Eastgate car park in Pickering. We have used it. The plan that works is to park in the large village car park in Thornton-le-Dale (YO18 7SD, pay and display; see our parking page), look round the museum, and let the bus take you to the saleroom and back. You see both Mathewsons sites in one day and never move the car. Mathewsons describe the shuttle as a weekday service, so do not count on it for the Saturday morning viewing; check with them, or use Eastgate car park in Pickering (YO18 7DY) and walk out along Thornton Road.
Inside the viewing
These photographs show some of what a viewing looks like: a Triumph Stag beside a spread of motoring memorabilia, a bronze Ford facing the aisle and a Jaguar with its bonnet raised. The signs, petrol pumps and cars share the space. They are photographs of one visit, not a guide to what will be on display when you arrive.

Two small things Mathewsons do not publish. There is usually a queue to get in, but it is not a long one. The £5 can be paid by card or in cash, so there is no need to find a cash machine first.
Coming by bus
The Coastliner 840 between Leeds, York, Malton, Pickering, Thornton-le-Dale and Whitby serves both Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale, so a car-free visit is possible: get off in Pickering for the saleroom or in Thornton-le-Dale for the museum and shuttle. Check the current timetable before relying on it; our getting here page has the stops. There is no mainline railway station in Pickering; the North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs from Pickering to Whitby and is a day out in itself, and the nearest mainline station is Malton, about eight miles away.
At the door
The rules apply to everyone: no visitors aged 16 or under, no pets, no food or drink, no handbags or large bags. Sign in at reception and wear the hi-vis vest you are given. If you are thinking of bidding, our guide to inspecting a classic car has a checklist to take round.
Making a day of it
Pickering has the castle, the medieval wall paintings in the parish church and the steam railway; our sister site's Pickering guide has the detail. Thornton-le-Dale has the beck, the thatched cottage and the museum: see Visiting Mathewsons and make a day of it. For a bed near both sites, see where to stay.
