About the events

  1. Easter Monday

    Duck Race

    Thousands of yellow ducks are released into Thornton Beck, raising funds for the village Christmas lights; it is the lights committee's fundraiser. The ducks run down the beck from Priestmans Lane to the thatched cottage, at about 3pm. Ducks are £2 each, from Wardill Bros and Baldersons, or on the morning. A family favourite.   2. Sunday of the late May bank holiday weekend

    Spring Gala

    A village gala organised by Thornton-le-Dale Sports Association at Millers Hill, Priestmans Lane, including a horse and pony fun day. The Thornton-le-Dale Gala is a horse and pony show and family day each late May bank holiday weekend. See our gala guide.

  3. Wednesday 4 August 2027

    Thornton-le-Dale Show

    The big one, a traditional one-day agricultural and country show, in its 105th year in 2026, with livestock, horticulture and handicraft classes, sheepdog and terrier/lurcher shows, children's sports, a craft and produce marquee, trade stands and demonstrations. Free parking at the show. Wednesday 4 August 2027, confirmed by the show society. The show is held on the Wednesday after the first Monday in August. Official site: thorntonledaleshow.org.   4. August Bank Holiday weekend

    Bank Holiday Duck Race

    A second duck race on Thornton Beck over the August Bank Holiday weekend, the same weekend as the Scarecrow Festival. Its details, route, prices and beneficiaries are not published; the race and its weekend are local knowledge, not published by the organisers. Read the duck race guide.

  5. August Bank Holiday weekend

    Scarecrow Festival

    The Thornton-le-Dale Scarecrow Festival takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, with the scarecrows staying in place through the following week. The 2026 theme is "any children's TV programme character from 1952 to today". Scarecrows appear throughout the village, including the pond area. Free to wander round. Application forms to enter a scarecrow are available at Wardill Brothers. The festival was cancelled in 2021 for Covid and has since returned; the Parish Council granted use of the village green for it in April 2026.

    Stargazing and the Dark Skies festivals

    Nearby Dalby Forest hosts stargazing evenings through the darker months, with the Dark Skies Fringe Festival each October half term and the Dark Skies Festival each February.     Christmas Lights Switch-On

    Organised by the Village Lights Committee around the Green and the village hall, with Santa, live music, mulled wine and food stalls. The lights are funded and put up by volunteers (and the Easter duck race). In later years the switch-on is usually on the first Saturday in December; see the Christmas lights guide.

    Clubs, groups and the village hall

    Regular clubs and private events take place at the Thornton-le-Dale Village Hall. The hall's own website lists what is on and how to book the rooms.
