Camping and caravan sites in and near Thornton-le-Dale

By Jon Cosson · Last checked

There are two campsites in Thornton-le-Dale itself, a pod site just south of the village and a larger campsite on the edge of Dalby Forest a few miles away. This guide sets out what each one takes, whether dogs are welcome and how to book, using what each site publishes on its own website.

We have no connection with any of these sites and receive nothing for listing them. Details were checked in October 2026; always confirm with the site before you travel.

Campsites in Thornton-le-Dale

Prospect Farm Campsite is a family-run site in the village, on Prospect Place off Pickering Road, next to Mathewsons. It takes tents, touring caravans, motorhomes and campervans, and every pitch has an electric hook-up. Twin-axle vehicles are not accepted. Friendly dogs are welcome on a lead. It is open most of the year, with reduced facilities in winter and a closure over Christmas. Book through the enquiry form on its website after checking the availability calendar, or by email.

Overbrook Caravan Park is an adults-only touring park on Maltongate, about half a mile from the village centre on the site of the old railway station. It has 50 hard-standing pitches with electric hook-up and caters for caravans and motorhomes. It does not take tents. Quiet, well-behaved dogs are welcome on a short lead. It opens on 1 March and closes on 4 January. Bookings are taken by phone or email. The park warns that the A170 at Sutton Bank is not suitable for caravans.

High Grundon, on Thornton Lane just south of the village, says it is not currently taking tourers, motorhomes or tents. It has two family camping pods, each sleeping four, booked through its website. Its directions note that sat navs often send drivers up Fox Lane by mistake; the entrance is off Thornton Lane.

Dalby Forest Campsite at Pexton Moor Farm, Low Dalby, is on the edge of Dalby Forest, north-east of the village. It has 42 pitches in two fields for caravans, motorhomes and tents, plus camping pods, a holiday cottage and a lodge. It is a family site with a children's play area and does not take group bookings. Pets are welcome. Book by phone or email.

The village gets busy on bank holidays, on Mathewsons auction days and around the Thornton-le-Dale Show in August, so book early for those dates. Dalby Forest's trails and the moors are a short drive away, and the Coastliner 840 bus stops in the village if you want to leave the car at the campsite. Our where-to-stay guide covers cottages, B&Bs and pubs with rooms if camping is not for you.
